Our History

  • 1977

    Talbot Theological Seminary opens an extension campus at Grace Community Church

  • 1986

    The Master’s Seminary is founded as a graduate school of the Master’s College. During its inaugural year, the school has ninety-five students and four full-time faculty members on the campus of Grace Community Church, and it offers a Master of Divinity degree program.

  • 1992

    A second degree, the Master of Theology is added to provide advanced training in exegesis and theology. | Word Publishing publishes Rediscovering Expository Preaching, the first book authored entirely by TMS faculty.

  • 1995

    Word Publishing also publishes Rediscovering Pastoral Ministry, a second volume from the faculty of TMS.

  • 1998

    The Master’s Seminary opens its headquarters, including the 23,000 square foot Master’s Grace Library, on the campus of Grace Community Church.

  • 2000

    The Master’s Seminary launches its first terminal degree, the Doctor of Theology.

  • 2004

    The Doctor of Ministry begins. This professional doctoral program helps pastors refine their preaching.

  • 2012

    TMS Library reaches 250,000 print volumes, complemented by several million theological resources available online.

  • 2015

    First extension campus opens in the Washington D.C. area.

  • 2017

    The Master’s Seminary begins the Master of Biblical Ministry, its first Spanish program.

  • 2021

    The MacArthur Center for Expository Preaching. The MacArthur Center will prioritize this specific art form—one that has defined TMS since the school opened its doors 35 years ago—as it provides resources for preachers everywhere and of all skill levels.

  • 2022

    Abner Chou becomes the president of The Master’s Seminary and University.

  • Steven Moffit | Lead Pastor

    Stephen, born in Northern Ireland, came to TMS in 2023. While in seminary, he served at Grace Community Church in the Crossroads College Ministry. Stephen graduated in the fall of 2025 and moved back to Northern Ireland with his wife and two children. Stephen now serves as lead pastor at Dromore Baptist Church.

  • Taylor Sinclair | Associate Pastor

    Taylor, a 2020 TMS graduate, served in Children's Ministry at Grace Community Church for six years while attending seminary. After graduation, he moved to Upland, California, with his wife and two children. Taylor now serves as the Pastor of Student Ministries and Administration at Foothill Bible Church.

  • Beau Bekendam | Lead Pastor

    In 2021, Beau planted and became the lead pastor and teacher of Christ Church Carpenteria. One year later, in 2022, he began at TMS. Beau graduated from TMS in the fall of 2025 and now continues to serve as lead pastor, supported by his wife and 6 children.

  • Rhett Smith | Associate Pastor

    Rhett and his wife moved from Michigan to California to begin at TMS in 2020. While in seminary, Rhett served in member care at Grace Community Church. Rhett graduated from TMS in 2025 and moved back to Michigan with his wife and now three children. Rhett serves as an associate pastor at Countryside Bible Church.

  • Tom Dickerson | Missionary

    Tom, a 2025 TMS graduate, recently moved to Malawi, Africa, along with his wife of 22 years and two youngest children. Tom now serves at the Central African Preaching Academy (CAPA) in Lilongwe, where he teaches men to preach God’s Word as he was faithfully taught at TMS.

  • Nathan Myers | Lead Pastor

    Nathan came to TMS after pastoring a small local church in Pennsylvania for 2 years. While a TMS, he worked as a Children’s Ministry intern at Grace Community Church. Nathan graduated from TMS in 2025 and moved back to Parkersburg, Pennsylvania, where he began as the senior pastor at Highland Baptist Church.
